Unit Rationale
"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places,
close to home—so close and so small that they cannot be seen
on any map of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual
person: the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he
attends; the factory, farm or office where he works. Such are the
places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice,
equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Unless
these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere.
Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we
shall look in vain for progress in the larger world."
-Eleanor Roosevelt

This is an integrated thematic unit that incorporates the subject areas and geometry and world history to teach students that they have the ability to become experts on a subject to provide awareness of the issue of human rights violations around the world. In this unit, students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively to understand how human rights are defined by studying the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights and decide how those rights are being violated in today's world. Students will be able to use their imagination and creativity to teach their peers and the public about a human rights issue of their choice. Students will incorporate art, technology, mathematics, and service learning to create and educate their fellow human beings to become aware of the issues of the world.
Essential Questions
