Focus on Social Justice
There are people worldwide that are experiencing violations to their human rights. Many people are unaware of the struggles that others experience. This unit will focus on students identifying current issues in our world today and spread awareness of this issue.
Evidence of Learning – Intended Product or Outcome
The display that students develop will include an overview of a human right’s issue, the history behind the issue, and where to go for more information or to help. The goal of the project is to spread awareness. Thus, students will produce a piece of art to distribute in the form of flyers and dilate that art to be displayed at the exhibit. After the exhibit, students will reflect on their learning experiences and how their new knowledge is affecting them.
Enduring Understanding
Students will inform the students, staff, and community of their findings during an exhibit where they present the information using technology and art.
Stages of Service Learning
Investigation: Students will choose, investigate and research a human rights issue using the web and other sources.
Preparation & Planning: Students will be able to choose their partners and topic on a human rights issue that they will be become experts at. They will be given time in class to research with the help of their teachers. Students will choose the medium that they want to present to inform the public of their findings.
Action: Students will develop a flyer with art and a presentation to share with the community. The art will be dilated to a size to display at the exhibit. Students will get to chose the rest of their presentation, such as PowerPoint, poster, or a speech.
Reflection: Students will be required to write about their experience in producing this project and how they perceived the effectiveness of their demonstration.
Demonstration: Students will demonstrate their expertise on their topic by producing a visual product that brings awareness to a human rights issue using technology and art.
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated by a grading rubric that encompasses their research, product, and their reflection on the process.
