Cooperative Learning
Students will be working in groups of four in this unit. Although they will be assigned to a group, within their group, students will get to choose their leadership role. Each student will be a leader in some aspect. The activities student will be doing will require and promote: Positive Interdependence, Individual and Group Accountability, Group Processing, Social Skills, and Face-to-Face Interaction (also known as PIGS Faces).
Groups will be based on attendance. Because the majority of this project is done in class, it is vital that every group has at least one group member who is there daily. All students will be responsible for all aspects of the projects, but the individual leaders will oversee the details of their section.
The four roles are:
Group Leader: The group leader will oversee all aspects of the project and keep the group on task.
Lead Researcher: This member will lead the research and keep track of the resources and the authenticity of such sources.
Technical Advisor: This member will oversee the accuracy of the dilation of the poster.
Director of Advertisement: This member will need to ensure the final product for the exhibit is ready. Meaning, the poster, media, or other form of display are of quality work and aid in spreading awareness.
This graphic organizer shows how the student activities in The Paloma Project include the five elements of PIGS Faces.
Part of cooperative learning is the process of reflecting and setting new goals as individuals and as a group. The daily update form that students will submit daily require students to be actively thinking about their goals and progress.
